Is anybody hosting their web sites from a home based server?

Currently CinVin and it's associated sites are all hosted on a dedicated server; nothing goes on the server without us knowing about it and it is not shared with other customers. It can get expensive though, especially if it is mostly a hobby.

Verizon FiOS will soon be available in my development and they offer a business package with a static IP offering speeds of 25/25 (25 megabits per second download / 25 megabits per second upload) for a price that is cheaper than what our dedicate server is costing us. Getting the necessary hardware for a home based server would be an investment but it would still be cheaper in the long run.

One of the things that he has me really up in the air though is that our dedicated server is on a 100mps pipeline so going to 25 would potentially be an issue. At the present time I don't think the volume of traffic to the server would overwhelm a 25mps connection but it is a concern.

So is anybody else hosting from home? What kind of problems did you run into? How did you configure your home networks to isolate your personal traffic from the public traffic? What kind of hardware & connection are you on?

I run my webserver from home.

Got an old computer (Intel P4 at 2,4GHz I think) that runs an ubuntu LAMP installation.
Have a 100/100 connection that works pretty well. Even though my router isn't quite good enough and usually I don't reach much more than 80mps or so upstream.

But this won't tell you much since I have basically no traffic at my sites. Only some bots and a few lost souls. :)
I wonder myself how long this setup will work if I actually would get some traffic.

For the OS I'd likely run CentOS on it; it is what the current server is and at work we are running Red Hat EL 6.0 so I'm more used to it than Ubuntu.

The speed is definitely a concern. Are you hitting that 80 up on just the web traffic or your personal surfing? I could get up to a 35 up package but the price would kill me budget wise.

Throw a Minecraft server on there and I suspect you'll be able to stress test it in no time! :D

I don't really have any preference. Not much of a Linux guy myself so I don't know much about the different distributions. Ubuntu has worked for me though.

With the small amount of traffic I have 80 is more than enough.
Don't have any actual numbers though. Not sure how you keep track of your upstream stats to be honest.

:) Perhaps. I'm actually not that interested in running a huge site though.
My interest is more in the software department. The sites is more of a bi-product so to speak...
