vBulletin vBulletin Staff Changes - August, 2011

Discussion in 'Forum Management' started by CinVin, Aug 30, 2011.

A bit of surprise this week as four members of the vBulletin team are leaving at the same time. While vBulletin has experienced staff turnover, a group leaving at the same time has not been seen since 2009 when 6 members left after Internet Brands acquired Jelsoft.

    The staff members leaving are:
    • Steve Machol - Customer Support Manager
    • Marlena Machol - Steve's wife, she handled customer service items such as the vBulletin customer links directory and more recently piracy reports.
    • Stefano Acerbetti - Lead Mobile Developer
    • Adrian Harris - Senior Operations Manager
Adrian has posted that he will be pursuing his MBA and traveling. No reasons have been given for the departures of Steve, Marlena, or Adrian.

    Heard about this yesterday.
Not sure what to make out of it really.

For me personally it doesn't mean anything. Never been active on the vBulletin.com community. Even though I've played a bit with vBulletin for a couple of years now.

I think it is causing chatter in the vB community because of who it involves. Steve has been a visible face of vBulletin for a number of years and the resignation of him & his wife with no explanation leads to rampant speculation. Combined with two other staff members leaving on the same day, including Adrian who was part of the IB management group, and the long time community members are sure to come up with theories on their own.

Since I am leaving the vB community, I can have some fun with my personal theories. :D I put forth that the 4 of them tried to act out a non-violent coup of the vBulletin offices to get Internet Brands management to realize the folly of their handling of vB but were quickly shut down after the office secretary revealed their plans. :p

Who else has a theory?

I'm not one for gossip. All I know is you aren't going anywhere til you release the next version of v3 Arcade  :p :D

I've used vB.com since 5th Jun '05 and never posted one message. I have no interest in that site or some of the egoistic members that post on there about how they have achieved this and that on their websites. Besides I've only heard of Steve and Adrian.

Slowly working on it. I think I need to create a fresh vB4 install instead of trying to use the remnants of the old CinVin vB4 installation due to a possible cookie conflict of having the two different forums (vB4 & now XF) on the same domain.

Most of my posting on the vB sites was a result of being involved with various projects. Once upon a time CinVin sold vBulletin styles and then there is v3A in more recent years. Besides those projects I am also on staff over at vBadvanced and used to be staff at PhotoPost ( talk about messed up development teams) plus some side projects that I would do for people privately. I suspect if it wasn't for that then I'd be a lot less active on the official vB forums.

It's probably just a joke. They tell everyone that they quit and then they spend their lunch breaks laughing at all the crazy theories people comes up with. :)

Some... interesting... responses about the resignations over at vBulletin.com lately.

Looks like the reason for Steve's resignation is coming to light. Internet Brands is now going after additional staff members in their lawsuit. Steve, so far, is not a target but is named.

Wow, just reading some of the pdf documents. No idea what IB are playing at - it is all a bit farcical

I can see more staff leaving and customers moving to other softwares in the coming months.

Of the names mentioned in the latest update, Darren, Colin, Mert and Steve no longer works for vBulletin. Freddie Bingham is still an active employee.

Today it has also come up that Jake Bunce, another long time vBulletin employee, has quit as well effective this morning. Wayne Luke has been promoted to Tech Support manager.

For anybody interested, a listing of the various public documents related to the lawsuit can be found here.

... and another one is gone. This time it is Jasper, the kid who has been doing the vB YouTube videos, various "How To" articles, and handling the official vB Twitter account.

I don't know who half these people are, never heard of Darren, Colin or Jasper - Mert sounds familiar but I'm never on vBulletin.com

What is worrying is how many are leaving - resigning (not agreeing with company procedure), for legitimate reasons or pushed?

My own forums domain runs out in 3 weeks and I've no idea what I'm going to do, tbh I think I've had enough of forums (I should probably have walked away when I planned to a few months ago), if I keep going do I stick with vBulletin - I much prefer the other main players IPB and xenForo but I've only played around with them a little and don't really have the desire to learn something new :(

Mert you likely know because he is also involved with vBSEO. He is based out of Turkey and, I forget what handle he used to use before switching to his real name, you've likely ran into in the various vBulletin communities.

It is indeed quite alarming. Some of Bthe remaining vB staff are starting to get a little worried because now anybody is open for being the cross-hairs.

It is a tough call and I was closing to going offline totally myself this year. At least with the switch to XF my interest has been renewed to keep me around though not necessarily in the same fashion that I was before with vB.

I usually use Lizard King on many different vBulletin communities including vBulletin.

Darren started working on vBulletin with Kier and Mike. In fact i believe it was Kier who did initial interview within Darren. He is a very good developer. He developed for vBulletin for a while.
Colin was a very old and was working with Kier and Mike.
Jasper started working with IB not long ago but he did lot's of work for customers with articles and youtube video's

Unfortunately vBulletin team had lots of staff changes. If we start naming them i'm sure non of us can get the list without forgetting a lot of names.

It is never too late to learn something new. Maybe a new system can give you enough joy so you can enjoy your forum days back :)

    Mert, welcome!

I was amongst those shocked to see the newest list of names mentioned in the lawsuit. Somebody summed it up best by saying that it seems like anybody & everybody associated with vBulletin whom has kept in touch with Kier & the guys are now on the IB's target list.

Reading the vB.com forums these days, I am still surprised to see a few long time customers still trying to vigorously defend vB. It reminds me of my self in my mental struggle I was having about sticking with vB because of the amount of time & money I have invested. In the end the importance of my own peace of mind is too important.

Thank you! :p For the life of me I couldn't remember your old handle. I'm so used to seeing "Mert" now in the vB forums & Twitter that "Lizard King" escaped me.

Yep, which is exactly why I am moving everything to XenForo from vBulletin instead of just going offline completely. CinVin, as you can see, is a bit slow but my primary personal site, Cool Sci-Fi, will be converted after the new custom design is done (Kim from Xenique is working on it). To help with my escape from vBulletin I am also relinquishing control of the v3 Arcade project to Brian (vBadvanced) and am consolidating everything else. Sci-Fi & genre stuff will be at Cool Sci-Fi while everything else will be migrated here. It really is like starting over again but for the first time in a while I'm happy again working on forums.
